Schools in Barrow, including the prominent Furness Academy, have engaged Barrow Police due to the escalating reports of underage vape usage, including those suspected of containing THC. This rising concern over vaping products and THC-laden sweets prompted the police to ensure stricter checks on local businesses.
Police Initiatives to Curb Underage Vaping
With the information relayed from the schools, the police have embarked on multiple initiatives. Test purchases are being conducted across businesses to scrutinise their adherence to the age limit. Those found in violation face potential prosecution, with fines amounting to as much as £2,500.
Furthermore, Barrow Police are delving into online purchases, especially those made via social media platforms, given the ease with which these platforms can be exploited by the youth.
Statements from Barrow Police
A representative from Barrow Police remarked, “We’ve collaborated with local schools, such as Furness Academy, to address the concerns over the surge in vape reports. Discussions on this pressing issue will occur at the Furness Inclusion Panel, which includes members from the Child Centred Policing Team in Barrow, Deputy Head Teachers, and Designated Safeguarding Leads.”
Highlighting the legal constraints, the spokesperson added, “The law is unambiguous about nicotine vaping products. Selling to individuals below 18 or buying on their behalf is a criminal act.”
On the health implications, they warned, “E-cigarettes potentially contain nicotine, an addictive substance. There’s a concern that its usage may instigate smoking habits among the youth.”
In collaboration with the police, local schools have committed to stern measures against those found using or possessing vapes on their premises. They are also seeking parental cooperation to jointly combat this growing concern.
The Vape Shop stands in solidarity with these efforts, upholding our commitment to age-appropriate sales and promoting responsible vaping within the community.
