How Did It All Start?

Herbert GilbertThe history of the E-cigarette is a mixed one.  Widely believed to have been invented in 2003 by a pharmacist in Beijing named Hon Lik after his father died of lung cancer, it seems that a device very similar was actually patented as far back as 1965 in America by a Herbert Gilbert.  The problems with tracing who originally thought of the modern e-cigarette stem from the fact that like cars or computers the basic components of an e-cigarette are always going to be the same; a mouthpiece, a cartridge (tank), a heating element/atomizer, a battery, and possibly a LED light on the end.  This is because the basic idea is always going to be the same – how to smoke, without smoking!

In 1965 Herbert Gilbert was a heavy smoker and even without the wide spread information and dire warnings you find on packets of cigarettes nowadays he realized that when you burn things like leaves and wood in your back garden or even lettuce leaves, cinnamon and bark, the resulting smoke is not something you wanted to be breathing into your lungs. This was essentially what you were doing with a cigarette – never mind all the nasty chemicals that are also hidden away in there.

The Inspiration Behind The E Cigarette
His idea was sparked by his aunt’s bakery.  Bread and biscuits were made from flour and cooked in fire but the resulting aroma was a delicious treat you most definitely did want to breath into your lungs.  The difference, he concluded, was that the flour was baked, not burnt.  Also, he remembered how a pot of tea was brewed, another ‘leaf’ that was ‘cooked’ but had a pleasing aroma that was pleasant to breathe in.  He needed to find a way to replace the burning of the tobacco and paper in a cigarette with heated, flavoured air – no combustion.

Herbert Gilbert only had the technology that was available in 1963 and he build the first electronic cigarette prototype with a battery powered heat source and flavoured water heated into steam.  It worked.  This device produced flavored steam but without nicotine.

50 Years On…
Todays e-cigarettes take full advantage of modern technology, using microprocessors. LED lights, flavour enhancers and vapour production systems to perfectly mimic or exceed a smoker’s experience of actually smoking a traditional cigarette. Simply the massive choice of flavours and the control a user has on his/her tobacco content is something that Herbert Gilbert would probably never have envisioned 50 years ago.

Ahead of his time and having just developed a serious competitor to the massive and powerful tobacco industry of the era his invention was never followed up, but although technology has advanced a lot since the 60’s the basic building blocks from Gilbert’s first design are all there in today’s e-cigarettes.  They may come in different sizes, have components in a different position or be controlled slightly differently from the original prototype design but if you remove any part of Herbert Gilberts original patent from a modern day e-cigarette it will not work.

The problem is that what is in your e-liquid can vary dramatically depending on where you get it from.

E-Liquids

In general the ingredients in e-liquids are not a mystery. Your e-liquid packaging should be clearly labelled and easy to read. It should contain a main base of vegetable glycerine, an ingredient of propylene glycol and flavourings (similar to what you find in sweets) which are food-grade and are either natural or artificial.

As with everything in this life, you pretty much get what you pay for. Skimping when it comes to your e-liquid can be potentially very harmful to your health. Look online and you will find many cheap e-liquid products from places like China which may look like a bargain compared to some others but look again.

Nicotine in its pure form is a lethal poison but because relatively few people get nicotine poisoning from cigarettes, as the nicotine is burned away in the smoking process, it is easy to forget this. As little as 30 mg of nicotine could easily kill somebody. E-liquid nicotine is carried by vapours and is not in its pure form, this is pharmaceutical grade, and studies have proven it to be safe. However a stronger form of nicotine was used as a pesticide in years gone by. The strength and poisonous qualities of this are obviously higher. Chinese e-juice is notorious for being manufactured with pesticide-grade nicotine, and industrial propylene glycol (which is found in anti-freeze!). These contaminated ingredients pose an increasing and unnecessary risk to e-cigarette users throughout the world. Some products do not even list the ingredients or have additional ingredients that are not in line with UK or EU regulation. Check the labels, do not take the risk with your health for the sake of “saving a couple of quid”- It is simply not worth it.

Back in 2003 Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, set about creating a nicotine delivery system that would be less harmful to the smoker and possibly aid the quitting process, thus the basic e-cig was born. Similar in size, shape and weight to a traditional cigarette, Hon Lik designed it to contain three parts: the battery, the cartomizer (a combination of the cartridge and the atomizer) and a silicone mouthpiece.  This battery-powered cigarette shaped tube heats and vaporizes a liquid nicotine solution for users to inhale. The cartridge within the cartomizer holds the e-liquid and is usually disposable once empty.

When the law was passed for smoke-free bars, restaurants, and night clubs this provided e-cigarette manufacturers with an opportunity to not only tout the benefits of a product that “looked, felt, and tasted like a cigarette” but was perfectly legal to use wherever traditional tobacco products were prohibited, but also of a product that could actually help you with quitting smoking altogether and its popularity soared.

Personal vaporizers only hit the e-cig world within the last couple of years, yet they have quickly gained traction. Data from a recent Wells Fargo study suggests that vaporizer sales are growing twice as fast as standard e-cigs.  According to the Wall Street Journal vaporisers are now approaching nearly 50% of total e-cig sales.  The vaporizer is similar to its e-cig cousin in that it is composed of a large battery on one end, a clear reservoir tank in the middle and a mouthpiece. By pressing a small button on the side of the battery, the user engages the heating element which vaporizes the e-juice and releases a tasty vapour.  The main difference is that vaporizers do not resemble a traditional cigarette at all.  They are more like large fountain pens and they can offer vapers more advanced, customizable options when it comes to flavours and quantities even to the point where users can ‘mix their own’.

Pretty much everybody now knows the sorts of pollutants and chemicals found in the traditional cigarette.  The consequences and side effects of smoking cigarettes is the UK’s leading killer so it makes sense that the best thing a smoker can do is quit, but it isn’t that easy.  Tobacco is a highly addictive drug than can be very hard to put down which is why one of the biggest selling points of vaping is that you can have your blasts of tobacco in amounts that you have full control over, without all the other harmful and destructive substances you find in a cigarette. 

However, with the popularity of e-cigs and vapes growing so suddenly, concerns are now being raised about whether they are really any better for you than traditional cigarettes or if they are actually more harmful to you and whether or not they are in reality encouraging people to take up the smoking habit instead of aiding people to quit it.

We in this industry believe vaping to be enormously beneficial to public health, and we have all been dismayed to see it take a pretty stern beating in the public arena.  An expert independent review published by Public Health England (PHE) has recently concluded what we at The Vape Shop have known for a while – that in fact vaping is around 95% less harmful to your health than tobacco is.  Not only that but they found no evidence at all that e-cigarettes and vaping are acting as a route into smoking for children or non-smokers and that it does in fact have the potential to help current smokers quit smoking cigarettes altogether.  Win/win all around.

The review found evidence that almost 2.6 million adults in the UK who vape or use e-cigarettes are current or ex-smokers who use the devices to either help them cut down or quit smoking all together, suggesting that e-cigarettes are actually contributing to the continued falling smoking rates among adults and young people.

Don’t get us wrong here, we are not suggesting that vaping is completely risk free – there is not much in this day and age that is – but when compared to smoking cigarettes the evidence shows that vaping carries just a fraction of the harm. You do not need as high a concentration of nicotine to get the same effect.  Also the high nicotine actually deteriorates the great vape tastes that are available.  E-liquids come in a wide variety of flavours and the less nicotine you use in the mix, the better the end result.  This actually encourages the vape user to use less and less nicotine, aiding them in the quitting process.

In the long run there is still a great deal of study that governing bodies need to do in order to alleviate certain public health concerns, but with Cancer Research UK funding more research to deal with the unanswered questions around these products including the longer-term impact and all of our local NHS Stop Smoking Services now proactively welcoming anyone who wants to use these devices as part of their quit attempt, it looks more and more likely that using vaping as a healthier, less expensive overall aid to quitting  is here to stay.

The Basics of E-liquid Alchemy

E-liquids are the liquids that fuel electronic cigarettes and they are simply a combination of nicotine, flavour concentrates and diluents – (PG) Propylene Glycol or (VG) Vegetable Glycerine – and by mixing these three ingredients to the correct ratios anybody can make their own unique flavours and strengths.  You get to be in control of the flavour, strength, vapour production and ‘throat hit’ of your e-liquid.

Propylene Glycol (PG)

Propylene Glycol is an organic compound.  It is colourless, nearly odourless, and totally tasteless so there is little or no flavour distortion.  This means that the more PG-based e-juices produce the biggest flavour intensity and throat hit.  Also as it is thinner than VG it takes less time and power to reach the level of vaporization so the vapour that is produced feels warmer.

Vegetable Glycerine (VG)

Vegetable Glycerine is an all-natural relatively viscous liquid generally extracted from plant oils, in particular, soy, coconut oil, and palm oil. It is typically clear with little hint of colour, odourless and in most cases sweet.  This is what enhances vapour production, and adds a little sweetness and smoothness to the e-liquid.
