Squid Industries Double Barrel

If you’re an intermediate or advanced vaper, like me, you will have undoubtedly bought, at some point, a 200Watt or double battery mod. Back in the day this would have been the then massive Innokin iTaste MVP Pro 3.0. This heavy duty 4500mAH battery was one one of the first large powered mods, whacking out up to 60W. Over the years mods changed to allow for separate batteries 18650 at the start and now a whole range of 20700, 21700 and more.

I personally have had lots of high powered mods such as lost vape, IPV 4, geekvape aegis 200w, IJoy Captains (2 of them), Aspire Speeder’s (3 of them) and lots more. As most dual battery mod vapers know these devices are generally big and bulky. When using this type of device subtly is nowhere to be found and sometimes there can even be a sense of embarrassment when hauling the large device from your pocket in-front of unsuspecting non-vapers.

Vaping A Brick
I, like most of you, have generally accepted that I will be using large devices for the type of vape I like. That’s until I came across the Squid Industries Double Barrel V3. At first I scrolled past this to the newer Tac 21 they produce which is based off the Double Barrel V3 but allows for 20700 batteries. But I went back. What drew me to the Squid Industries Double Barrel V3 was it’s compact size for a dual battery Mod. It’s just a tad larger than the Aspire Zelos mod which sits neatly and discretely in the hand.

Solid Build
Prior to purchasing I read about the weight of the Double Barrel which is made of solid stainless steel. It’s a heavy dude, not that heavy that you can’t lift it but heavy enough that you don’t want to drop it on your foot. I’ve switched from my Aegis 200w to this and I am so pleased. You don’t get all the massive features you get with some devices but I don’t use them anyway. I’m a straight set-the-wattage and fire vaper, and that’s all I want from a device. The added bonus of the Squid Double Barrel is it’s got one solid dial that acts as the fire button, the wattage dial and the menu access button. It’s simply brilliant and ebay to use. As an added bonus I can lock the wattage once set so it does not adjust itself while sitting comfortably in my pocket.

It’s a solid device which smacks of quality, it’s easy to use and does exactly what it’s meant to without the slightest bit of fuss PLUS it’s powered by 2 x 18650 batteries which means I can go a whole day without running out of power. I use it on 70W but it will fire up to 150W if you need higher. The best thing about this Mod is that it’s compact and sits in the hand nicely without causing embarrassment when you vape it outdoors. Just don’t drop it as you’ll dent the floor or injure yourself.
Idiot Proof Vaping
If you have been looking for a high powered discreet Mod that you just want to rely on to fire your tank without any complication of 6 zillion menus and personality options then the Squid Industries Double Barrel V3 mod is for you.

Freemax Mesh Pro Voodoo

0

I used to always envy dripper vapers for 2 reasons: 1 they always seemed able to produce massive clouds and 2 the flavour hit they got from dripping smashed any experience I had with standard sub ohm tanks. But although I envied them I just could not get my head around buying and using a dripper tank myself. They just seem like lots of work with intricate screws and technical know-how when it comes to cotton, twisting cotton, making your own coils etc. Then there is the constant need to drip juice into the tank every other puff. It all seems so laborious and technical.

Then one day I decided on a punt and after reading a few reviews to buy the then new FreeMax Mesh Pro tank claimed to match any dripper experience with cloud and flavour but without all the technical messing around. With the Mesh Pro tank you just screw in one of their awesome coils, fill the tank up and away you go. And boy what vape, for the first time since 2011, when I first started vaping, I really felt like I had come home at last. I experienced a depth of vape and flavour that reached the parts other sub ohm tanks only promised – but failed to deliver.

2 Year Mesh Pro Commitment
In the 2 years I have been using the Mesh Pro tank I have yet to have a coil (I use the triple mesh 0.15ohm 80-100w which I fire on 70w personally) fail or burn out. No way! I hear some of you exclaim. Well it’s true. In 2 years I have never had a coil burn out. I have changed the coil at around 4-5 weeks, not because I needed to, but because of pure boredom coupled with a desire to fit in a new coil and get that ‘new coil vape hit’. I have to say I have no experience with any of the other coils in the Mesh Pro range so I can’t speak for them as I have always used the triple mesh one.
Freemax Mesh Pro CoilsThe Freemax Mesh Pro Voodoo
The problem with this bloody tank comes is that its got some sort of voodoo consistent brilliance that wont let you go. Like most vapers I like to try new products and get that ‘wow’ factor. But the Freemax Mesh Pro has cursed me. It has literally put all existing and new tanks to shame. My last attempt to leave this beautiful beast of a sub-ohm tank in the side draw was with the Geekvape Zeus tank last week. After another leaking episode, the Mesh Pro emptied it’s 5ml contents in my coat pocket (it does not have a locking mechanism on the tank so the top can slide open), I decided I would look for a new tank with a leak proof locking lid.

I eyed the Geekvape Zeus, although it’s been out for a little while the reviews are good and and it looks superb, plus it has a locking cap, a thing which the Freemax Mesh Pro SORELY misses. I had been sideways glancing at the Geekvape Zeus sat on the shelf for over a week as the idea of changing bubbled in my consciousness. Then last Wednesday I grabbed it off the shelf, ripped off the sealed packaging and got excited as I primed the new tank. I let it sit for 10 minutes denying my urge to pick it up and start vaping straight away. I wanted to make sure I got the full vape experience as I knew the competition this tank had in with Mesh Pro.

After half an hour of vaping I was deflated. I had ruined a saleable product and was left with the calling of the Freemax Mesh Pro voodoo again. The Zeus is good as sub ohm tanks go, but in my opinion not a patch on the Freemax Mesh Pro. This isn’t the first time I have tried to leave the Mesh Pro and it won’t be the last either. I have tried the Cleito 120 (twice), Horizon Tech Falcon King and the Uwell Valyrian 2. The problem is that all the new sub-ohm tanks are built from the Freemax Mesh Pro origins and none, again in my opinion, match the depth of vape and flavour this tank creates. Even with it’s easy to leak top and having to mop up 5 ml of juice from my pocket or car stowaway every now and then, it’s still the most brilliant and top performing sub vape tank on the market.

So lastly, a shout out to FreeMax – PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, release a new Mesh pro with a lockable filler cap on the tank. I mean it can’t be hard, you guys already put one on the lower ranged Fireluke

Should our children be used as COVID-19 guinea pigs?

With the Government now saying that primary schools will be open by the 1st June and children should be sent back to school, (interpreted as get rid of your children so you can go back to work), many parents are being forced to consider putting their children at risk and as a consequence family members of catching the dreaded coronavirus.

We would like to hear from you whether you think the Government is right to enforce parents to send their children back to school in the height of a pandemic. The Government is stressing that the contamination rate in young children is lower than adults and that the new COVID-19 guidelines for primary schools is enough to safeguard the children. These new measures include:

  1.            Class sizes of no more than 15 pupils
  2.           Primary schools could begin reopening from 1 June
  3.           Staggered break and lunch times, and different times for starting and finishing the school day.

The Government is also advising that the children and teachers should NOT wear masks.

Parents Revolt

However some parents are not happy with being forced to send out their children to face an increased risk of catching COVID-19 and would rather wait till the infection rate “R” has reduced significantly. One woman, Lucy Brown, has set up a petition on Change.org to give parents the right to choose if they want to put their children at risk. (Click here to view or sign the petition). So far there have been 475,000 parents that have signed the petition. When asked about the petition Lucy said: “As a mum, I don’t want to face serious repercussions for making a choice I feel affects the safety of my daughter during a global pandemic.”

Timetable is Reckless – National Education Union

It isn’t just parents that are up in arms about the Government’s decision to send kids back to school. Mary Bousted, co-leader of the biggest teachers’ union, the National Education Union stated “This timetable is reckless. This timetable is simply not safe.”

So who should have the overall power to decide on our children’s safety – is it the Government or the parents? Should parents be fined for not sending their kids to school? With such a stark reality of risk of infection to children should the Government put in place a “Parents Right To Decide” during this pandemic allowing parents to choose whether to send their children to school or not. We already know that some geographical areas of the UK are more COVID-19 prevalent than others, so will the decision to send kids back to school be area specific or right across the board putting some families at more risk than others.

Vaping Prevents COVID-19 Infection?

There have been many theories put out in the media lately about the possible pros and cons of vaping in relation to the COVID-19 coronavirus. The naysayers claim vaping makes someone who vapes more susceptible to infection whilst the Pollyanna’s believe that vaping adds a certain protection to the person who vapes against bacteria and infection. The war of words, facts and evidence has been raging with pro-vaping communities complaining that anti-vaping organisations are trying to use the COVID-19 pandemic as a driver to ban vaping. Theories and counter theories have been swapped in the media and government buildings.

So, which one is right?

What the Pollyanna’s Say

Firstly, the vaping Pollyanna’s draw their optimistic theory from a study conducted in the 1940’s named – The Bactericidal Action of Propylene Glycol Vapor on Microorganisms Suspended in Air. This study suggests that vaporised propylene glycol, (found in most e liquids), can kill airborne bacteria thus helping to prevent/block bacterial airborne viruses. The conclusion of the study stated, “that vaporized propylene glycol eviscerates many forms of bacteria, including pneumococci, streptococci, staphylococci, and even the influenzae virus.” Another piece of evidence is based on the historic use of PG vapor being pumped into schools and army barracks to disinfect the air from bacteria and viruses. Read report here …

Needless to say that every pro-vaper and pro-vaping organisation jumped on, not only the historic study’s finding but also the previous actual use of PG vapour for disinfection purposes, as factual proof that vaping could indeed help prevent or limit, to some extent, catching COVID-19.

What The Naysayers Say

A recent report published on ABC News stated that some public health experts believe that the reason a number of younger people are suffering from Coronavirus (COVID-19) is down to the fact that they vape. Although there is no scientific evidence related to this, a lot of anti-vaping organisations have jumped on this bandwagon. Another report released by MassGeneral claimed that both smoking and vaping lowered the efficiency of the immune system by damaging parts of the system that are aimed at keeping illnesses at bay.

On top of the above points anti-smoking and anti-vaping voices claim that both smoking and vaping increase the risk of spreading COVID-19 due to the coughing caused by both. They also claim that because smokers and vapers alike hold their ciggies and vape devices in their hands bringing them up to their face they could be at higher risk due to touching their faces more.

Conclusion

With both the pros and the cons there is not any factual evidence to support their findings one way or another, just theories. It’s true that smoking does indeed affect the immune system, but the studies conducted on vaping have only gone as far as the effects of the e liquid in liquid form and not the vapour produced by the e liquid. As far as the studies conducted on PG vapour as a force against viruses and bacteria, I personally, think are as nutty as the anti-vaping claims. COVID-19 affects anybody and everybody regardless of age, race, smoker, non-smoker, vaper or non-vaper.

The best advice is already being given by the medical, scientific and Government leaders. Stay at home, social distance and wash our hands. Vaping will not make or break the coronavirus, but following the guidance put out will. My best friend has COVID-19 and is moderately ill. He is not a vaper or a smoker and is a keen football player. He is self-isolating now and we all wish him well. The point is COVID-19 does not discriminate – so eating echinacea, stopping vaping or turning vegan will not act as a definite defense against this new virus. The only safe bet is to strictly follow the guidelines and avoid close contact with any unnecessary individuals.

UK E Liquid Flavour Ban

Will the e liquid flavour ban come across the Atlantic from the USA and be enacted in a similar way within the UK? Rhode Island is now the fourth state to completely ban, effective immediately, the sale of any e liquid that is flavoured other than tobacco flavours. It joins three other states – Massachusetts, New York and Michigan all of which have banned outright all e liquid flavours apart from tobacco. These bans ride on the back of the spate of lung illnesses and deaths in 2019 caused by illicit THC e liquid and street-made e juice that contained vitamin E acetate which was being used in e cigarettes. Gina M: Raimondo the Governor of Rhode Island stated that flavoured products are aimed at children and blamed them for “a public health crisis.”

Vape companies in the UK are watching with bated breath as these bans start to spread in the US because it may be a sign of what lies ahead for the UK vaping industry in the future. If the UK looks at banning e liquid flavours at some point it will decimate the vape market in the UK causing lots of vape shop vendors to go out of business not to mention e liquid manufacturers whose core business is built on flavoured juices. Granted the recent Vaping in England 2020 report by Public Health England stated that they did not see an increase in young children getting into vaping who didn’t smoke already using e cigarettes. But, the US bans could the chink in the vape industry armour allowing the pharmaceuticals and big tobacco companies to put pressure on UK parliament to restrict flavours and thus ensure the market shrinks giving them more of a foothold (conspiracy theory 101).

UK vs US Vape Legislation

The main reasons for the bans in the US, fuelled by the recent lung illnesses of 2019, is aimed at preventing vape products being attractive to children because of all the sweet and various other attractive flavours. The difference, however, between the UK and the US is that our legislation is a lot stricter. For example, the maximum nicotine level in the UK is 20mg per 10ml bottle while in some states in the US there is no restriction on nicotine strength with some on sale at 50mg. Not sure who would vape this, even before the EU tobacco directive the maximum The Vape Shop would sell was 24mg. Another area of UK vs US vape legislation is vape tank size, in the UK the sale of tanks is restricted to no bigger than 2ml, in the US tank size is not restricted. One of the most important differences between the UK and US is that UK e liquid manufacturers must be licensed by the MHRC which requires stringent testing in liquid and vapour form of all e liquids being made in the UK. The US only requires Food and Drink Administration registration.

With over 98% of ecig users enjoying flavoured liquids as opposed to tobacco e juice the banning of these flavours will have a dramatic impact on a large majority of UK vapers. Some vapers will inevitably fall back to tobacco cigarette smoking because they don’t like the taste of the tobac juice (I know this sounds crazy as cigarettes don’t taste that great). While the argument can be made that having a strawberry, candy or cake flavoured liquid is not what vaping should be about, (as it’s aim is to be a safer alternative to smoking fags), taking away the option to make vaping a more palatable experience from users is a bit draconian. It’s like unflavoured or having just one flavour of alcohol, vitamin c tablets with no flavouring, cough sweets that are unsweetened and nicotine chewing gum devoid of the spearmint or other flavourings.

E Liquid vs Alcohol Flavouring

In the UK a person needs to be 18 years old before they can legally purchase alcohol. There are so many drink-aware and other programs aimed at the problems of underage drinking yet the branding, flavours and marketing of alcohol such as alcopops and Jager bombs are clearly aimed at the younger generation. The effects of alcohol on our health and economy are dramatic compared to ‘0’ from e cigarettes. Below are some statistics and consequences of alcohol:

– In 2017/18, there were an estimated 1,171,253 admissions related to alcohol consumption in England

– In 2017, there were 7,697 alcohol-specific deaths in the UK

– There were approximately 561,000 incidents of violent crime in England and Wales in 2017/18 where the victim believed the offender to be under the influence of alcohol

Looking at the above figures one might conclude that severe regulations should be placed on the manufacture and sale of alcohol, specifically relating to deterring underage people from drinking. One of these regulations should be around flavours of alcohol to lessen its attractiveness. But there is no legislation, anywhere, regarding making alcohol taste a certain way to make it less attractive.

According to the Vaping in England Report 2020 by Public Health England the UK stats relating to vaping have:

0 (ZERO) Deaths
0 (ZERO) Crime
0 (ZERO) Hospitalisations directly linked to vaping

Cure Worse Than The Problem

Whether the UK will follow suit in looking at banning flavoured e liquids is anybody’s guess. Personally I think if this happens it forces more and more vaper’s into illicit purchasing of home made e liquids and DIY e liquid making in one’s own home. Both of these options could be catastrophic as we have seen in the US when vapers used illicit THC and home e liquid resulting in lung illnesses and deaths.

Day 4 Lockdown

The Vape Shop shut its high street shop doors to the public a few days ago in-line with the UK Government lock-down rules – we still operate fully online, working hard and getting online orders dispatched the same day. We prefer this safer option than looking at ways to keep the shops open through trying to circumvent the ban on all non-essential shops. I have already heard of ways some vape shops are trying to get around the ban such as not allowing customers into the shop premises but serving them on the street just outside the shop doors. Whilst it’s understandable vape, and other businesses, are desperate to maintain their income and keep their companies, they could be killing people that congregate outside their shops. The Vape Shop will not put lives at risk, so for now we are wholly operating on an online basis processing orders daily and sending them via Royal Mail next day delivery.

Personally I expected vape shops to be classed as essential, I was wrong. Even if vape shops had been allowed to stay open The Vape Shop would have closed our doors to the public anyhow, purely for safety and protection of our customers and for the staff from the dreaded COVID-19 virus. The spread of this virus is super-fast and most of it is done by people showing absolutely no symptoms whatsoever. This means that whoever you see on the street could be infected, or a carrier and until we have access to mass testing for the general public we just don’t know. Following the medical and Government’s advice is the safer option at the moment.

The COVID-19 Virus

The RNA sequencing (genetics) of this new virus which differentiates it from the standard flu, (the flu virus has human DNA/RNA which means the immune system recognises it and can fight it), and the COVID-19 which has non-human DNA/RNA, (animal DNA/RNA which means the human immune system doesn’t recognise it and therefore does not protect against it) this fast spreading virus is too dangerous to take risks with. For example, in just TWO WEEKS this virus mutated itself from animal-to-human to human-to-human, that is fast. It has mutated again so we now have two COVID-19 strains – strain S and strain L (this means two vaccines are needed). If it mutates again it gets even more difficult to cure. Although the times we find ourselves in our unsettling and anxious life still goes on and the birds are still singing in the morning. Together, albeit 2 metres apart, we will get through this.

Helping Preserve Life

At The Vape Shop we have adapted to the temporary new way of operating and business is going on as usual in-line with Government and medical guidelines. We are making sure vapers can access their essential vape juice and products without interruption in this already anxious time. Having to revert to buying tobacco cigarettes from the local off-license or supermarket is not an option. The whole point of the lock-down is to preserve life so, the scenario of vapers isolating to protect their own life and the lives of others, only to be condemned to picking up the fags, which will kill them, in this lock-down is simply insane. That’s why we offer a 24-hour turnaround on all orders placed through our website.

UK Vape Shops Classed As Essential

Writing about the benefits of vaping over smoking tobacco, or about the great new e liquid flavours we have available, or even the latest in vape news seems like a pointless waste in these extraordinary times we all find ourselves in, vapers, smokers and non-smokers alike. Like a ship that’s sinking, the normal things that divide all aboard are put aside when facing a dire crisis and although everything we see in the media is about COVID-19 it’s hard not to focus on how it is affecting all our lives.

At The Vape Shop we already operate customers limits in our shop, social distancing and COVID-19 hygiene guidelines. We have decided to operate a skeletal structure to keep the shop open purely to aid vulnerable vapers who cannot use a computer or don’t have access to online. Forcing these people back to tobacco cigarettes because they can’t access their local vape store is not really an option. Masks and gloves are a given and are worn by all our staff that deal with customers, customers appreciate this as it adds to their safety as well. All surfaces and points of physical contact are disinfected regularly throughout the day and things like card machines, tills and computers are alcohol swabbed after each use. Windows and doors are opened fully to aid good fresh air ventilation and circulation. All these things help to minimise risk and as mentioned customer limits and social distancing in the shop are put in place.

The latest Covid-19 figures from Italy where 800 people died of the virus in one day and large increase in contamination and deaths in the UK weigh heavily on our hearts and on our minds. We would encourage all our offline local shoppers, where possible, to start to place their orders online and select ‘Free Pick Up’ in the shop. That way we can avoid people gathering in the shop, the length of time a customer is at the shop and also do away with cash handling and credit card processing. Once your order is processed you simply pop to the shop and give your name and your products will be handed to you straight away without fuss (as you already paid online) or unnecessary lengthy interaction.

A Time For Community & Service

Now is not a time for profit margins and competition but a time when we as businesses should see how we can best serve our communities in what little ways we can. At The Vape Shop we have already been handing out free Purell Advanced hand sanitizer to all our customers, topping up their bottles when they get low and also to members of the public in need. Talking to customers, especially the elderly and ones with medical conditions is a great way to find out how they are holding up and more importantly if they need any help. Walking pets, food shopping and regular contact are things we as businesses can get involved in. Most of us have vans, staff and access to things regular customers don’t that could help in some small way. The same can be said for the younger customers. Do you know someone that is in the vulnerable of society that’s been asked to isolate and who vapes? Can you arrange to pick them up from the shop on their behalf? In trying to help each other and our communities we can, and will, get through this.

Vape Shops An Essential Store

It’s important that vapes shops keep operating whether online or under strict social distancing guidelines. We don’t want to send vapers who need their nicotine hit back to tobacco. There is no point in getting through this coronavirus epidemic only to die of cancer because a vaper has gone back to smoking through not being able to access vape products. Italy with one of the severest lockdowns on retail and businesses have exempted vape stores from the lockdown – classing them as essential. The persona behind this move was Dr. Riccardo Polosa a world-renowned scientist and researcher on vaping and tobacco harm reduction. He is the founder of the Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction (CoEHAR) in Catania, Italy. Spain and France have both done the same and the reason is clear. If keeping vape shops open allows vapers to access their vape products and keep them away from tobacco smoking this in turn will ease the pressure on the NHS, even if only a little. Every little counts!
