A retail establishment, known as the ‘Famous Shop’ located in Dudley’s High Street, has been mandated to cease operations for a three-month period, following discoveries of illicit cigarette and vape sales. This decision was reached after the Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court was informed of the owner’s continuous illegal activities.
These proprietors had previously run the Dudley Mini Market, which was shut down in the past year due to similar offences. Despite this setback, they promptly relocated to open ‘Famous Shop’ across the street, resuming their illegal trade. Trading standards officers conducted seven investigative operations at this new location, confirming the continuation of these unauthorised sales.
During one of the investigations in July, illicit products were identified on the premises, as reported by Dudley Council. Interestingly, despite introducing new ownership in July, subsequent checks in August and October unveiled additional stashes of prohibited tobacco and vapes, cunningly concealed in diverse locations including bags, vehicles, and two other High Street properties. These properties too were closed following a court directive.
This recurring breach led to magistrates acknowledging that there was an ongoing effort to bypass legal processes. Consequently, a three-month closure order was imposed on ‘Famous Shop’ during a recent hearing.
Councillor Ian Bevan, who oversees public health at Dudley Council, commended the efforts of the trading standards team. He remarked, “The decisive action taken against this shop is a testament to our dedication to protect our communities. This sends a resounding message to all: we will relentlessly pursue and shut down any business that engages in deceptive practices, ensuring a level playing field for all genuine enterprises in Dudley.”
