Disposable Vapes: Is the UK Lagging Behind in Regulation?

France announces a ban on disposable vapes, prompting questions about the UK’s stance.

France Sets the Pace

France’s Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, recently declared a forthcoming ban on disposable vapes, aiming to address their increasing allure to the younger generation. As part of their anti-smoking drive, the French government is intent on curbing the initiation of smoking habits fuelled by these disposables. This initiative is rooted in the concerning statistic of 75,000 smoking-related deaths in France every year.

Disposable Vapes: A Growing Trend

With flavours like pink lemonade, marshmallow, and bubblegum, disposable vapes in France have gained considerable traction, especially given their price range of 8 to 12 euros. Their undeniable appeal to teenagers is heightened by such enticing e liquid flavours. Even though France has rules against selling and advertising these products to those under 18, these regulations have been largely sidestepped.

International Moves Against Disposables

Various European nations are formulating policies specifically targeting disposable e-cigarettes. Belgium has curbed online sales, while Ireland is mulling over a full prohibition. On the other side of the globe, New Zealand has predominantly banned most disposable vapes and enforced strict marketing guidelines.

The UK’s Current Stand

Compared to the determined steps of its European counterparts, the UK’s measures against disposable vapes seem somewhat tepid. Although there have been calls from UK lawmakers for stricter packaging and marketing rules concerning disposable vapes, decisive action is yet to be seen. Steve Brine, MP and chairman of the health and social care committee, pointed out in July the urgent need for more robust regulations. He highlighted the deceptive nature of the disposable vape industry, which, despite its claims, evidently targets a younger audience.

Praise from The Vape Shop

The Vape Shop in the UK, which has already discontinued disposable vapes, applauds France’s bold decision.

Time for Decisive Action?

With nations around the world taking definitive actions against disposable vapes, the spotlight turns to the UK. Is the country doing enough to mitigate the growing influence of disposable vapes, especially among the youth? The onus now lies with the UK to set a precedent for its public health strategy.
