Dangers of Synthetic Cooling Agents in Ice Eliquids

The Rising Popularity of Ice Eliquids and Associated Risks

With the trend for 2023 and 2024 witnessing a surge in demand for ice vape flavours, it’s essential for users to be fully informed about what they are inhaling. This article, brought to you by The Vape Shop, delves deep into the dangers of some Ice Eliquids.

Understanding the Synthetic Coolants in Vaping

It’s not uncommon to find synthetic coolants, such as (Koolada) WS-3 and WS-23, in e-liquids that promise the sensation of ‘cool’ or ‘ice.’ WS-3 and WS-23 are synthetic cooling agents commonly used in various products to provide a cold sensation upon application or consumption. Chemically known as N-Ethyl-p-menthane-3-carboxamide (for WS-3) and 2-Isopropyl-N,2,3-trimethylbutyramide (for WS-23), these agents are often found in cosmetics, personal care products, and more recently, in e-liquids for vaping. Their primary function is to replicate the cooling effect typically associated with menthol, without imparting the minty flavour. While they serve to enhance user experience by delivering a refreshing sensation, concerns have been raised about their safety, especially when inhaled in significant amounts through vaping. The draw of these cool vapes has seen many brands utilising these ingredients, but are they safe?

Findings from the American Thoracic Society Conference

Recent studies have thrown light on the potential hazards of such synthetic cooling agents. Scientists conducted extensive research, purchasing a range of vape products marketed with labels like “koolada,” “kool,” or “ice.” Their findings were concerning.

In the products tested, a staggering 24 out of 25 e-liquids contained the synthetic cooling agent WS-3. Further, nearly all of the 14 Puff Bar flavours examined had traces of WS-23. Even more alarmingly, some fruit and candy flavours that one wouldn’t associate with cooling effects tested positive for WS-3.

Margin of Exposure (MOE) – What Does It Signify?

The margin of exposure (MOE) is a crucial metric to gauge safety. Ideally, for any product to be considered safe, it should have an MOE of at least 100. This implies that the levels of synthetic cooling agents are 100 times lower than what has been identified to cause organ damage in animal trials.

However, when factoring in typical vaping habits, most of the tested products had an MOE below 100, spotlighting potential health risks. A leading figure in this research, Dr Jordt stated, “Our measurements highlight that e-cigarette users are inhaling WS-3 and WS-23 at concentrations deemed unsafe by the WHO, potentially leading to organ toxicity.”

Potential Organ Damage by WS-23

WS-23, a prevalent synthetic cooling agent, has raised concerns in the medical and scientific communities due to its potentially harmful effects on several vital organs. Initial research has specifically pinpointed the liver, lungs, and kidneys as being at potential risk. The liver, a primary detoxification organ, might suffer from compromised function, potentially leading to toxins accumulating in the body. In the lungs, continuous inhalation of WS-23 through vaping might lead to respiratory issues or decrease lung capacity over time. The kidneys, which filter waste from the blood, might also get affected, hampering the body’s ability to filter out toxins efficiently. The overarching concern is that while short-term exposure might lead to minimal immediate damage, repeated and consistent exposure to WS-23 can have cumulative effects, resulting in exacerbated long-term damage to these crucial organs.
