Why are Americans dying from Vitamin E Acetate & EVALI Lung Disease with over 2,807 hospitalized EVALI cases and around 39 deaths recorded as of February 2020 across 50 states in the US. The UK has only had one report of EVALI to the MHRA. Why the big difference?

First of all it’s important to note that an additive in some THC-containing e liquid, or vaping, products, is strongly linked to the EVALI lung disease outbreak. THC (a cannabis derivative), or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects (it gets one high). When created illicitly for vaping it can contain Vitamin E Acetate, which should not be inhaled directly into the lungs.

MHRA Licensing & Testing
In the UK the MHRA operate strict guidelines for the manufacture and sale of e liquid. A licensed e liquid manufacturer has to perform all sorts of laboratory tests on their liquid as well as in vapour format. These results, performed by a legitimate laboratory, are then sent to the MHRA for scrutiny to make sure they meet the guidelines. This ensures that nearly all e liquid on sale in the UK, from reputable sources, is safe. The problem can arise when consumers buy from non-licensed and non-reputable sources. In doing this they are putting their health at risk as they cannot know with what they are vaping is safe or not.

THC Vape In The UK
The sale of THC in the UK comes under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations Act 2001 and is illegal so there is little chance of consumers inhaling Vitamin E Acetate apart from users who illegally source THC vape products through non-regulated sources. Too many times I have seen customers walk into The Vape Shop looking for batteries to power illicit THC cartridges they have bought online. Because these are illegal they are not regulated and users don’t understand how dangerous vaping something like that can be. With the increase in the availability of CBD, (a non psychoactive ingredient in the cannabis plant), in the form of vape liquid and oral drops (and now even CBD flower) it’s no wonder the THC aspect has latched onto this market.

Decline of EVALI
Luckily through the increased public awareness of the risk associated with THC-containing cartridges, or THC ejuice, product use by consumers has declined in the US. This is in conjunction with e liquid manufacturers in the US removing any traces of vitamin E acetate from any of their e liquid ranges. Luckily because of the MHRA guidelines for e liquid manufacturing in the UK Vitamin E acetate is not present in UK liquids. While the risk of EVALI caused by vaping illicit THC e liquid is reducing due to the above actions there are still people at risk who are searching and purchasing THC vaping products to get high without having to use tobacco methods.

The Vape Shop would like to warn all vapers to stay away from THC vape products, even if they come from a seemingly reputable source. For one it’s illegal and for two, and more importantly, you could be putting your health at serious risk that may result in death. It’s just not worth it.

All over your cheeseburger, to all over your clothes in front of the colleague you’ve tried so hard to get the attention of – leaks can happen at the worst times. The vaping gods don’t care about your street cred or your love life, a leaking vape machine can strike at any moment.

When your device starts leaking, it is easy to lose hope and begrudgingly head to the store for an expensive replacement. But, before you grab your jacket and trudge out the door, take a look at our guide to help you identify your leaking issue. Our post is packed with lots of possible reasons why your device is leaking and how to fix it.

To understand why your device is leaking, we first will need to grasp a basic knowledge of the inner workings of your vape tank.

The Inner Workings Of Your Vape Tank

The tank on your vaping device is undoubtedly an important part of its functioning. It is the place where your e-juice is kept and where said e-juice is converted into vapour. Grab your vaping device now and take a look at it.

You should easily notice the coil head and the e-juice tank. This tank connects to the device with a connector. The connector transfers power to your coil from the battery. An air passage – sometimes referred to as a chimney – connects to the device’s coil head, which transfers vapour to the mouthpiece. This mouthpiece has a dual function of being the place you add e-juice to the tank and where you inhale produced vapour.

Now you have a basic knowledge of how your vape tank functions, we can use this to pinpoint why your vape tank is leaking and what you can do about it.

Air Passage Leakages

Some leakages stem from numerous problems related to the air passage. Here are the most common occurrences:

Incorrect refuelling – the tube running from the mouthpiece to the central aspect of the tank must remain free of juice. Make sure you do not get any in the chimney because it can cause your device to malfunction and leak. Just like when pouring a beer into a glass, tilt the device and slowly make it vertical as you get near the top. Also, make sure you never overfill it.

Airflow – increase your air intake setting if your leaks occur after long and powerful drags. Having your intake setting on too low prevents the required airflow and causes leaks.

Flooded tanks – e-juice can escape outside your device’s coil housing if your coil is trying to vaporise too much liquid at once. Fix this by using a cotton swab to absorb excess liquid, increase your power settings for increased vapour production, or try blowing it out manually via the mouthpiece.

Condensation – the chimney of your device may have leftover vapour, which condenses back into liquid. Take an additional drag to help resolve this issue.

There is also the possibility of coil issues causing leaks. Coil issues can be divided into multiple problems so we have given these potential diagnoses some more column space. They include:

· Mass-produced defective coils or unauthentic coils are in circulation

· Your coil may not be screwed in place tight enough

· Old coils can burn and cause leaks – invest in a new coil!

· Mismatched coils added to the wrong tanks

Leakages From The Sides

Alternatively, you may be experiencing a leaking device from the sides of the tank. There are two main possibilities and ways of rectifying this issue. If you do have a leaking device, you should hope that one of the following two issues is the problem because they are both inexpensive to solve.

A faulty seal is a common problem but before you check the seal for damages or small gaps, you should inspect whether the tank is fastened into place properly. Both can be fixed easily. In many situations, the issue is with damaged or missing O-rings. These small items can be found extensively and are very cheap to replace.

There is also the chance that your leakage is the result of a crack or a series of them. The Pyrex material used in the manufacturing of these devices can become worn and damaged over time. if you have owned your vape machine for a while, these cracks may have accumulated and compromised their water-tight specification. Replacements are also inexpensive.

Other Possible Reasons

If your leaking device falls into one or more of the above categories, but our solutions have not done the trick then do not worry. There are two other possible solutions for your leaking vape machine:

Positioning – you should leave your tank in a vertical position in every situation you can. This includes overnight and during charges.

Maintenance – leakages may also be the result of leftover residue caused by burning e-juice. Unscrew your device and clean with hot water or alcohol. Before using it again, make sure it has fully dried by leaving it overnight.

Are You The Problem?

If all of the above has failed, you may need to take a look at yourself. The cause of a leaking tank may, in fact, be due to your inhaling technique, especially if you are a newbie vape user. There is a big difference between smoking and vaping as the latter does not require as powerful of a drawing force. An excessive force presses more liquid towards the coil chamber. The solution? Go steady and take longer drags instead.

Resolved Or Still No Cigar?

If the possibilities and solutions listed above have not been fruitful, there is one last solution. Unfortunately, grab your jacket again because it’s time to get a new vaping device. Vaping should be enjoyable so investigating any more possibilities is probably not worth your time – or money!

Ohm Coils

The coil on a vaping device is the part which gets heated up by the battery to aid the vapouring process. You can get single coils or double coils depending on the how many wires wrap around the central wick.

In either of these coil types, there will be a small print on the side. This print will read numbers often between 1.5ohm and 2.5ohm. Having an ohm at the lower end of that spectrum will give you a harder hit, warmer and more vapour and also less time between charges. Ohm is important for the individual vaping experience, but no rating can really be classed as better than another rating.

Mesh Coils: What’s All The Noise About?

Those ohm coils were the standard for most vapour-device users, until recently. Nowadays, there is an ever-growing hype surrounding the use of mesh coils over ohm coils.

It is not the first time that mesh has been used in a coil. Mesh has been used as the central wick in previous designs, but it is the first time that coils have used mesh in the outer rings – with the purpose to heat the wick.

The big difference, aside from the obvious change in material, is in the surface area of the two coils. Mesh coils tend to have a much bigger surface area. This affords multiple benefits, which we will get on to shortly.

We know what you are thinking. There is no specific need to use mesh to increase the surface area of a coil – and you would be right. However, with the increased surface area there is a correlating increase in mass, which in turn makes the coil very thirsty for power. Using mesh counters this by creating a large surface area without significantly increasing mass.

There is a tendency for people to automatically create a buzz around an innovative change to something old. Yet, with the mesh coil, the noise and excitement from vapour users is justified. There are many benefits of using a mesh coil over the standard ohm options. Here, we will run through them with succinct explanations:

· The relation between a mesh coil’s surface and their mass allows them to achieve instant ramp-up times even when using a mid-level wattage.

· Heat is more evenly spread to produce intense flavours

Well we have come a long way since 2011. Since then I have watched as the vape industry has grown at a mind-boggling phenomenally fast rate. Initially the push-back by society, at first fighting against this new product and growing scene, and the fear-mongering seemed like it would almost crush the vaping movement before it got out of its cradle. But such was the totally unique and tergetted success with smokers being able to easily switch from tobacco to the vaping that the omentum overcame the negative prejudice.

How A Community Of Vapers Has Grown

Now, when I sit in one our vape stores, I have a feeling of deep contentment as I serve and speak with regular customers who have been with The Vape Shop for years. A sense of community has grown among us (vapers) as our common purpose – to get off and stay away from the fatal tobacco addiction – is one that binds us all together regardless of age, race, career or background.

I have seen people with chronic COPD come into our shops on disability scooters only to see them several months later walking, (albeit with a stick), and with a reduced COPD count. Their faces clearer and there health improved which happens when you go from smoking 40 cigarettes a day to zero. Although it’s not world-peace or saving the world I do feel grateful that I live in a time when the e cigarette came about. A real solution to century old problem for people that have not been able to benefit from the existing nicotine replacement therapy products.

The Old Days

I have, and still do with an open jaw watch as the product change from week to week each new one coming with a new improved performance and features aimed at delivering a better vaping experience. Some of you might not remember the EGO T and EGO C style cigarettes with a top fill cartridge that dripped the e liquid onto a small coil. Often you would have to blow into the tip first to make sure the liquid had gone through to the coil below. Leaking was an hourly occurrence and when the first 900MAH battery came out it was literally a ‘Wow’ moment.

There are some great features of the Aspire Cleito 120 tank. Its Maxi Watt Coil has a Clapton structure and offers a much higher level of powerful vaping. This stylish tank also has an unusual bare glass design. While many manufacturers have gone with a design which protects the tank from breakage with any accidental drop, the Cleito 120’s designers have gone with simple aesthetics. It’s clear glass means you can see what’s going on in the tank easily, and yet you won’t need to worry about breakage since it is made from highly durable Pyrex and can withstand a drop or two. Unless you’re planning on using it as a football, it should be pretty safe from damage. This is a surprisingly sturdy tank that should stand the test of time.
